It all began with a little idea at the end of last year to make a few accessory bags for the ladies in my family. My first attempts turned out so well and made such lovely gifts that I have made more and more of these little bags. They are now my favourite creation.
Combining crochet and sewing, they really are a lot of fun to put together.
What you’ll need:
Premium DK Cotton
4mm crochet hook
Piece of material
THE CROCHETING PART:
This design is super easy and only uses single crochet stitch (SC).
Crochet Guru helped me so much when I was first learning to crochet. Her videos are so helpful and they show you in detail exactly how to do all the stitches. If you are a beginner and don’t know how to do the single crochet stitch needed for the accessory bag, please have a look at Crochet Guru’s video below.
Ok, so now that you know how to do a single crochet stitch, let’s get started…
Row 1: SC in second chain from hook, and then in every other chain along the row.
Row 2: Chain 1, then SC in second chain from hook, and in every other chain along the row.
Row 3 – 56: Same as the above. Finish off.
(Measure and cut your material before sewing up the crocheted part of your bag).
Fold the finished square in half and, using your yarn needle, sew the sides together using the left over cotton and turn inside out so that the side with the loose threads is on the inside. Now you have the crocheted part of your bag done.
#Tip: I keep a notebook next to me and write the numbers 1 – 56 on a page. As I complete a row I cross off the number and this way I keep track of my progress.
THE MATERIAL AND ZIPPER PART:
Measure and cut out your material. Your material should be roughly 2cm bigger than your crocheted square around all four sides. Then draw a line horizontally across your material making sure each half will be the same length. Cut your material into two equal pieces.
Sew each piece of material onto the inside of your zipper.
Once the pieces of material are both sewn onto the zipper you can sew, first the bottom, then the sides together. This makes up the inner of your accessory bag.
PUTTING YOUR BAG TOGETHER:
Put the material inner with the zip into the crocheted bag and pin the crocheted bag onto the zipper.
Now you are going to sew the two bags together. Make sure that your thread is only going through the zipper and not the inside material, this takes a bit of effort but leaves the bag with a neater finish.
If you are looking for a beautiful and fun gift to make for someone or you just want one yourself, then give this accessory bag a try. Happy crocheting!
